A Brand Built for Scale: Constructive Bio's Next Chapter
The Constructive Bio team.
Since 2022, Constructive Bio has quietly and deliberately engineered proteins and peptides with chemistries that don't exist in nature.
The science is extraordinary. Constructive is using the world’s first fully recoded bacterial genome to design drugs we didn’t even have a way to make until now. And as Constructive approaches a new level of technical and commercial maturity, and moves from a story about research to one about partnerships and scale, the brand needed to catch up.
"We really wanted something that reflects what we are doing as a company," says Constructive CEO Ola Wlodek. "A little more energy in it. And reflect the precision of how we're building."
Working closely with the Constructive team, we rethought, replanned, and recreated their brand. We sharpened their story into a single organizing idea, and built a messaging and design system to carry it.
The Challenge
Biotech is awash in a sea of blue and green. Open ten biotech websites and count how many use the same blue, the same green, the same stock imagery of gloved hands and glowing petri dishes. Constructive Bio’s story called for something as distinctive as its platform, a brand that could speak with equal confidence to scientists evaluating the science, investors evaluating the model, partners evaluating the fit, and future hires evaluating the mission, without shapeshifting for each audience.
The other constraint was subtler: Constructive wasn't introducing itself for the first time. It was a company with years of platform-building behind it, stepping onto a bigger stage. The new brand had to signal momentum, not debut.
Our Approach
We started by taking a close look at what makes Constructive Bio so special: they can design and manufacture drugs with incredible properties, and produce them at a scale to improve the lives of patients around the world. That capability, more than any tagline, was the real starting point. It gave us our organizing idea: Design. Make. Cure. From there, every decision had to earn its place.
The logo: In thinking about a new logo, we offered a range of designs echoing amino acids and proteins, as well as something a little out of the ordinary: the peregrine falcon. Drawing from conversations with stakeholders across the organization, the peregrine struck us as a perfect metaphor for the kind of speed, precision, and intent that Constructive is engineering into biology itself. The team was drawn to the falcon immediately, and the final peregrine logo is built from a visual language that harkens to amino acid and protein assembly, drawn from the science itself.
The colors: To overcome biotech’s sea of blue, we proposed a bright shade of Cambridge Blue as a nod to the company's UK heritage and its home in one of the world's deepest synthetic biology ecosystems. Vivid yellow and dark black gave the visual system a high contrast and distinctiveness equal to their science.
"The colors are distinctive, recognizable, and memorable," Ola notes. "We want them to set us apart from the rest of the space."
The look: From the start, the Constructive team was drawn to a modern aesthetic. We looked to the Bauhaus movement, a design philosophy built on the same principle Constructive applies to biology: that function and form aren't in tension, they're the same problem. That led us to a modern, geometric typeface in that tradition, and from there, to a layout system of clean quadrants and minimalist, structured grids that echo the type rather than compete with it. The result reads less like decoration and more like engineering, with every element placed with intention.
The message: Not least of all, we refined the messaging underneath the visual system. We sought to replace their more academic register with something softer, more engaging, but no less direct: Design. Make. Cure. It's a framework built to organize everything from the website's information architecture to how the science gets explained in a first meeting with a new partner.
The Result
The result is a brand built for a company at an inflection point. Constructive is ready to deploy its technology across partnerships and make a real impact, and now it is backed by a brand marketing system built to scale alongside the science.
As Ola puts it: "Our future is bright, just like our colors."
